The Whale Coast (40 Minutes from Capelands)
Stretching along the coast from just outside of Cape Town is the spectacular Whale Coast, which is world famous as an annual breeding ground of the Southern Right Whale. The Whale Coast offers spectacular nature with a rugged coast line and one of the nicest coastal drives in all of South Africa. Along the way lie various small coastal towns like Rooi Els, Kleinmond, Stanford and Hermanus, all of which offer fine country flair. The best time for enjoying this attraction is the period between June and November, as this is the Whale season. In Hermanus one can spot Whales directly from shore, or take a boat trip to see the world’s largest mammals up close and personal. This is an ideal day trip which offers great nature, rustic villages, and an experience of a lifetime.
Gansbaai (1 Hour from Capelands)
The Gansbaai Coast is a diverse stretch of coast offering great nature and whale spotting. This village is also world famous for shark cage diving – so if you are feeling adventurous, this is exactly the excursion for you. Gansbaai lies along the Whale Coast, and can be combined with a visit to Hermanus.
Penguins at Boulders Beach (45 Minutes from Capelands)
The African Penguin, also known as the Black-Footed Penguin, is found on the south western coasts of Africa. One such colony has moved in to Boulders Beach close to Simons Town and use this area to breed, swim, and pose for tourists. Enjoy these little animals up close and personal in their natural environment just south of Cape Town. If you are on your way along the Whale Coast towards Hermanus, just stop at Betty’s Bay, where another of the penguin colonies resides. Boulders Beach is a tourist attraction which offers a great penguin experience for a small entry fee. Along the beaches are small rock pools and beaches where bathing is permitted.
The V&A Waterfront (30 Minutes from Capelands)
The Victoria and Alfred Waterfront is one of Cape Town’s most visited attractions. Located in the heart of a working harbour, the V&A Waterfront offers various restaurants, hotels, bars, theatres, cinemas, and a shopping mall. The Waterfront is also the starting point of various boat and helicopter excursions along the coast and to Robben Island, the former prison island where Nelson Mandela was detained in the past. The V&A Waterfront is also a hop away from Cape Town city centre which offers attractions like Green Market and the South African Museum. Make a day of it, and enjoy a mix of African flair meeting Europe.
Table Mountain (40 Minutes from Capelands)
This world famous flat topped mountain defines every impression of Cape Town and is the most prominent landmark the city has to offer. The mountain is part of the Table Mountain National Park, and offers great views from the top over Cape Town, Robben Island, Camps Bay, Clifton and the suburbs. Visitors can access the mountain via cable car, or can walk up the mountain in about 2.5 hours. Hikers are advised to start early to avoid the midday sun, and enjoy the breaking of the day over the mother city.
Chapmans Peak Drive (1 Hour from Capelands)
You might know Chapmans Peak Drive subconsciously, since this famous stretch of road is one of the all time favourites with automotive manufacturers in regards to showing their vehicles in advertisements worldwide. Chapmans Peak is situated on the western side of the cape peninsula about 15 km south of Cape Town and just outside of Hout Bay. Make a day trip of it and visit the Cape of Good Hope and combine this with a nice lunch in the old Hout Bay Harbor. This stretch of coast offers great view, exhilarating drives, and extraordinary nature.
Cape of Good Hope (1.5 Hours from Capelands)
This beautiful location is not the most southern point of Africa, as it is often wrongly perceived to be. Yet this doesn’t take away any of the natural beauty of this rocky headland in the tip of the Cape Peninsula on the Atlantic coast. Situated in the Cape of Good Hope nature reserve, the area offers splendid views over the ocean and the mountains. There are also hiking trails in the reserve which can be enjoyed. Accessing the lighthouse is possible by a track Car for a small fee, or visitors can walk up to the lighthouse in about 15 minutes.
Cape Agulhas (2.5 Hours from Capelands)
Cape Agulhas is situated on a rocky headland on the Cape Peninsula and is the geographically most southern point of Africa. This is also the geographical division of the Indian and Atlantic oceans – whereas the real division is between the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Agulhas. This is an ideal day trip which can be combined in several ways with for example Hermanus and the Whale Coast. Start early and enjoy the natural treasures that South Africa has to offer in abundance in this area.
Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens (35 Minutes from Capelands)
The Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens are situated at the foot of Table Mountain, and offer a feast for the eyes of all plant lovers. Amongst this spectacular setting, Kirstenbosch Gardens hosts free live entertainment every Sunday from late November to early April with well known national and international artists. The Botanica Garden hosts 60 HA of cultivated plant life, and was established in 1913. Make a trip of it and stroll through this world famous garden, and enjoy flowers, streams, ponds, and old trees.
Butterfly World (40 Minutes from Capelands)
This is the largest free flying park for butterflies in southern Africa, and offers a great experience of colours and scientific information on these beautiful creatures. The concept of a butterfly park was originally imported from the UK, and the South African counterpart was opened in 1996. The park features beautiful indoor gardens with great landscaping, as well as several water features and exotic plants for the butterflies to enjoy. The park lies on the R44 just before the N1 – which makes it a great addition on a day at the wine farms.
Beaches (5 Minutes from Capelands)
Close to Capelands are some of the most splendid beaches the country has to offer. Gordon’s Bay has the popular blue flagged Bikini Beach, which is a small cosy beach very popular for locals and visitors. The beach is situated close to the harbour, which provides a great setting for fine hot days at the sea. In the area are also several rock pools which can be visited for swimming excursions. More beaches in the area are in Strand, Camps Bay, Grotto Beach, Kogel Beach, and Kammabaai. If beach relaxation is what you are looking for, you’re at the right place.
Safari at Aquila (2 Hours from Capelands)
This is one of the up and coming game reserves in southern Africa. Aquila strives not to be just another luxury game reserve, but to offer educational experiences to visitors in order to communicate the importance of conserving animals and plant life in southern Africa. Visitors can experience a big 5 safari on the reserve – if you are not visiting Kruger Park, this is the closest you can experience the big 5 in the Cape. Aquila is also actively involved in Cheetah conservation, and has invested large amounts of funds to ensure the survival of these beautiful cats. This game reserve does so much right – it is worthy of support of locals and visitors.
Cape Winelands (0 Minutes from Capelands)
Large Mountains and fertile green valley’s make the Cape Wine lands extraordinary. Some of the world’s best wines are grown and manufactured in this area due to its Mediterranean climate. Along the different wine routes in the Cape there are hundreds of wine farms which offer great wine tastings and light meals to enjoy in beautiful orchard settings. The best way to explore the wine lands is to drive and visit wine farms spontaneously – there are always new gems to be found. Enjoy whites, reds, cherries, ports and brandies – all manufactured in South Africa in areas like Somerset West, Stellenbosch, Paarl, Franschhoek, even as far as the little Karoo.
